YESTERDAY'S SEMINAR WAS ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC! SO MUCH SO THAT ONE ATTENDEE EMAILED US TO COMMENT ON HER EXPERIENCE:
"Thanks so much for allowing me to attend your seminar as your special guest... It was fabulous. You were so right on with what you tell your students . From the heart is what it's about. Getting people to realize that they have the tools within their reach is the key to getting them to recognize their potential. Your approach is subtle yet right on"!
FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO MISSED YESTERDAY'S SEMINAR, THE EVENT WAS HOSTED BY BET'S COLLEGE HILL 2 ALUM NAFIYS BLAKEWOOD. MANY OF THE ATTENDEES WERE SURPRISED TO FIND OUT THAT WE HAD TWO GUESTS SPEAKERS LINED UP FOR THE EVENING. GBENGA AKINNAGBE, "CHRIS" OF HBO'S ACCLAIMED "WIRE" SERIES GAVE GREAT INSIGHT INTO HIS HUSTLE AND THE SACRIFICE NECESSARY TO MAKE IT AS AN ACTOR. LESSON LEARNED: "YOU DON'T WORK , YOU DON'T EAT" !
OUR SECOND GUEST OF THE EVENING WAS NATURI NAUGHTON, CURRENTLY STARRING IN THE BROADWAY PRODUCTION OF HAIRSPRAY AS "LIL INEZ". NATURI GAVE ATTENDEES THE OPPORTUNITY TO ASK HER QUESTIONS ABOUT HER PREPARATION FOR HER ROLE AS LIL KIM IN NOTORIOUS. SHE SPOKE ABOUT THE COACHING SHE RECEIVED FROM CASTING DIRECTORS TWINKIE BYRD AND WENDY MCKENZIE . THEY URGED HER TO CHANNEL HER EXPERIENCES WITH HER FORMER GROUP, 3LW TO EVOKE LIL KIM'S FEELINGS OF INADEQUACY DURING HER RELATIONSHIP WITH THE NOTORIOUS BIG.
LESSON LEARNED: ADVERSITY CAN BE A STEPPING STONE
WITH THAT SAID IN THE WINK OF AN EYE ACTING WORKSHOP WAS CREATED TO BETTER PREPARE ACTORS FOR WHAT CASTING DIRECTORS SEEK WHEN CASTING FOR FILM AND TELEVISION PROJECTS.

I just wanted to say "THANK YOU" for sharing yourself and knowledge with us on 8.18.08. It was an honor to be in your presence....it was worth the travel from Philadelphia to New York to witness it first hand!

Dear Wendy,
I just got home from your seminar tonight and I want to thank you again for inviting me to it. It not only refreshed my memory on what I had learned from you, but I also learned new things. I was happy that you had guest speakers who are already working speak to us about their experience acting.
I am looking foward to taking more classes with you because I feel like I definitely need them and like I should always take them even when I feel ready.
Please when you get a chance let me know your availability and price for individual sessions.
Before I say goodbye I want to add that after the seminar tonight there happened to be a casting for an independent movie in room 16H and I went to it. I had gotten a text message for it earlier but didn't realize it was there and thought I wasn't going to make it. It was there by coincidence and I just went for it. Well I had to act like I was fed up with an ex and wasn't taking him back and I did great! Thanks to what I learned from you I thought of my ex-husband and everything he did to me and I was in a real place and they notice!
Wendy I can tell you that after that I feel like I can keep this rolling. I feel more confident. You had mentioned today just go in and give it all you got and I did that. Sorry I keep going on and on I'm just happy cause I'm usually so nervous at auditions and tonight I was not. Thanks again and hope to talk to you soon!
Sincerely,
Martha Maria
A Metro card to get on the train, ($ 2.00), grab some lunch down at time square ($ 9.50) hand over some change to a homeless man ($ 1.35) being on time to Wendys seminar (Priceless)...
The Seminar was GREAT. who ever thought Wendy was just a casting Director is sooo wrong.. She challenged every actor in the room to did deep within and perform from their hearts.
We dont know how good we are as actors until we are put on the spot. I have a new respect for the "Cold Read". I was actually on the train today reading out loud to myself, did people think I was crazy? who cares.
Thanks for the wonderful seminar Wendy, I learned too much for my own good....
One more thing..
(This is a true story), After the seminar, I had an audition for an off broadway show later that evening. I really wasn't in the mood to go, but when I got there, the guy told me to sign the sheet and have a seat. I asked for sides and he said I needed a 2 minute monologue prepared.. well I didnt have one, so I took my stuff and headed towards the elevator to leave. On my way, I was thinking about the seminar and Wendys words came in my head and said, NO EXCUSES, PREPARATION IS KEY (Im not joking, I swear) I turned around, went back to the guy and asked if I could impov a monologue that I was kind of familiar with. He said sure. I did it and left. (the ride home felt good) Today, I got a callback from the director to come in this evening to read for him.
Im just getting home from the call back. I read some sides, did some improv and they will make final decisions tomorrow... I was almost was about to go home and miss this huge opportunity...if theres anything I got from the seimanr Its, 'N0 EXCUSES'
wish me Luck (o:
Thanks Wendy
Thanks again Wendy for this amazing opportunity. I left the seminar feeling really inspired. Preparation is the key.
sup Wendy, This is Jason Hurt.
Your Seminar was a great opp. for young actors to get a front row view of what a casting director looks for in and expects of an actor while auditioning. The special guests where great and i was able to take some good advice back home. hope all is well, see ya at the next one
Wendy, I just wanted to take a moment to thank you for allowing me to sit in on your seminar. My film and television production company also has an artist management division and I often observe classes and workshops to find fitting places for clients, so naturally you were on my list of people to peek at before making recommendations.. I expected to sit only 45 minutes and ended up staying the entire session. You’re brilliant, tough, fun, engaging and extremely informative. In one session I watched you give a room of uncertain actors clarity, understanding and confidence while not only improving their craft and self awareness, but giving them a crash course on branding themselves. Hats off to you Wendy… Fantastic!!!
Hi Wendy, I was one of the students who attended your acting seminar this past weekend. I learned a whole lot from it and I really look forward to meeting with you again. You are such a positive inspiration!!
Wendy McKenzie prepared me for the acting world! I Still can not believe how much I learned in just 3 days! I am so thankful for the knowledge I learned on auditioning and most of all I feel so ready to go out there and conquer my DREAMS! The last day of class I attended a show hosted and judged by very influential people in the industry, and when they asked the audience if anyone would like to come up and ACT and showcase their talent, I had enough courage to do so. Shortly after that i networked with many people involved in the show and felt invincible! I owe that experience to WENDY MCKENZIE. Thank you for giving me courage and teaching me to believe in myself.
